Graduate Study in Mechanical Engineering
Degrees Offered:
Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering
Doctor of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering
The Mechanical Engineering
Department at New Mexico State University encourages qualified
US and international students to apply for the M.S. and
Ph.D. degree programs. The research activities in the Mechanical
Engineering Department cover a broad range of areas.
Research Facilities:
With over a century of tradition and
excellence, research is the foundation of the Mechanical
Engineering Department’s Graduate Program at the M.S.
and Ph.D. level. The faculty of the department are conducting
research in the following areas: energy; defense; intelligence;
testing and evaluation; commercial, applied and theoretical
research.
We provide fully networked (fast
Ethernet to desktop) offices to our students and state-of-the-art
computational facilities including advanced engineering
analysis software. Several research laboratories exist in
the department including: interconnections lab, nondestructive
testing and evaluation lab, modal analysis lab, biomechanics
lab, combustion lab, composites lab, robotics lab, and a
product realization lab, to name a few.
Educational Objectives:
- We strive to educate those who will advance knowledge
and become the future leaders of industry and
academia.
- We strive to conduct both basic and applied research
in mechanical engineering and related interdisciplinary
areas.
- We strive to provide service to the profession to the
State of New Mexico, the country, and the development
of engineering worldwide.
Career Opportunities:
Our Mechanical Engineering graduates
are highly sought after by companies and government laboratories
including: Los Alamos, Sandia National Laboratories, NASA
White Sands, US Army, IBM, Dell, GM, Ford, and Delphi Automotive
Systems. Many students complete their M.S. studies at NMSU
and continue on for the Ph.D. degree at NMSU and other universities
including: MIT, Penn State, Cal Tech, and the University
of Arizona.
Scholarships, Awards, and Financial Support:
Fellowship, research assistantship,
and teaching assistantship support are available to qualified
graduate students. Awards are made on a competitive basis.
Applications for fellowships, scholarships, and teaching
assistantships must be made by April 15 for the fall semester
and by December 15 for the spring semester.
