Course Information

Mechanical Engineering

The mechanical engineering program prepares students for a wide range of professional engineering careers, including energy and utility, manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, defense and space, research and development, and many others.

Our program begins with a foundation in math and science, accompanied by a progression of engineering topics.

After this solid basis is achieved, students move on to advanced courses with emphasis on applying analytical skills, problem solving techniques and the use of computer-based tools.

Laboratory courses are incorporated throughout the curriculum providing hands-on experience in the application of engineering principles and theories. Cooperative education and internship opportunites are also incorporated in the ME program.

Graduates of the program will also be prepared for graduate studies (subject to grade-point and particular university requirements). Students will be prepared and encouraged to take the Fundamentals of Engineering examination as a step towards professional registration.

Aerospace Engineering

The curriculum for Aerospace Engineering for the first two years of study is the same as that for Mechanical Engineering. In junior and senior years, AE students will take 9-10 courses that differ from the ME curriculum. The coursework for the initial semesters includes basic engineering concepts, communication skills and laboratory procedures. As an AE's knowledge and skill increases, the course work is more specialized. Students receive a thorough grounding in the primary areas of aerospace engineering.

Graduates of the Aerospace Engineering program will be prepared as leaders in research, design, construction and analysis of aircraft, satellites, manned and unmanned space/aerial vehicles, and the systems they incorporate.

Current ME students have the options of switching their major to Aerospace Engineering or incorporating an AE minor into their ME degree.

For those switching at the beginning of their junior year, no additional courses will be required beyond the AE curriculum. For those further along, some additional courses may have to be taken to replace ME courses with AE courses.

Transfer ME students may be able to complete either the ME or the AE degree by taking the same number of courses at NMSU.

Current NMSU engineering students who are not ME majors and wish to switch to the AE major will generally need to make up some course work, as would be the usual case for most changes in major.
